Punjab Kings, put in to bat first started off brilliantly. Mayank Agarwal who didn't make a mark in the last two games came into the role of the destroyer as he along with skipper KL Rahul put an opening stand of 122 runs. Punjab Kings scored 59 runs without losing any wicket in the powerplay. Delhi Capitals were out of ideas to break the partnership as Mayank Agarwal scored his 1st half-century of this season. KL Rahul scored 61 runs off 51 balls while Mayank Agarwal hammered 69 runs facing just 36 balls. Mayank Agarwal departed in the 13th over after being caught at a deep-point position. Chris Gayle didn't produce much effect in the match as he went back scoring just 11 runs. KL Rahul departed in the 16th over off Kagiso Rabada. Deepak Hooda and Shahrukh Khan accelerated the score taking Punjab Kings over 190 runs in 20 overs.

Delhi Capitals looked hopeless bowling to Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul. Chris Woakes, Kagiso Rabada, Lukman Meriwala, and Avesh Khan were too expensive but they bagged 1 wicket each.

Chasing a massive score of 196 runs, Delhi Capitals achieved the target in just 18.2 overs through great batting by Shikhar Dhawan. The opening pair of Delhi Capitals put 62 runs in the powerplay itself as Prithvi Shaw fired 32 runs in just 17 balls. After the departure of Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan kept on scoring for his team. Steven Smith playing his first match of this season got out scoring just 9 runs. Shikhar Dhawan displayed a great performance in the middle but fell short by 8 runs to score a century. Shikhar Dhawan added 92 runs in just 49 balls in which he smashed 13 fours and 2 sixes with a strike rate of 187.76. The left-over work was completed by Marcus Stoinis and Lalit Yadav as they reached the target with 10 balls remaining. Marcus Stoinis scored unbeaten 27 runs and Lalit Yadav scored 12 runs not out in 13 balls and 6 balls respectively.

Every bowler of Punjab Kings was too expensive especially Riley Meredith and Mohammad Shami. Mohammad Shami conceded 53 runs in his 4-over spell and Riley Meredith gave away 35 runs in just 2.2 overs. Jhye Richardson bagged 2 wickets but conceded 41 runs in 4 overs. Arshdeep Singh and Riley Meredith took 1 wicket each.
