The original English Premier League only existed for the 1992-1993 season. The league consisted of 22 teams, and Manchester United won the inaugural title. Since its founding in 1992, the EPL has become one of the most popular sporting leagues in the world and is currently home to 20 clubs.

The Most Memorable Moments in the Evolution of the English Premier League:


1. The first-ever title was won by Manchester United, who beat Manchester City 2-1 at Old Trafford.


2. Arsenal set a milestone by winning nine successive league titles before being knocked out by Aston Villa in next season's FA Cup Final.


3. Liverpool's history with English Premier League can be matched by only one team: the Manchester United of Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 13 major trophies with the Red Devils and is now one of the all-time greatest managers in club football history.


4. Chelsea gained their first English Premier League title, as they beat Liverpool 5-4 on penalties in a dramatic FA Cup Final.

11. 2013-2014 was a memorable season for Crystal Palace, who became the first team promoted to the Premier League to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in their first top-flight season in 32 years.


12. In 2002-2003, Newcastle finished fifth and was the highest placed of three teams which won promotion from the second-tier division (Championship). They have never been back to that position since then as they are now considered one of the biggest underachievers in European football.


13. Gianfranco Zola, who played for Chelsea from 1996 to 2003, is currently the owner and manager of Watford as well as being a member of parliament since 2013.


14. The original English Premier League is said to have been created as a means of preventing the two dominant clubs at that time (Manchester United and Arsenal) from further strengthening their dominance.


15. In the 2009-2010 season, Chelsea won the title even after being under a lot of criticism even up to the final few weeks of the previous season.


16. Liverpool has won this league more times (18) than any other club but Manchester United is currently leading the way in terms of championships won in the last 20 years with 10 titles compared to Liverpool's 8 titles since the 1992-1993 season.


17. Another accolade that Liverpool has held since the inception of the English Premier League is that of leading goal scorers in the league. They have won more league titles (8) than any other club and are the only team to reach 30 goals or more in six consecutive seasons.


18. The English Premier League has seen several high-scoring seasons, but the most prolific season for Chelsea came in 2003-2004 when they scored 50 goals in 38 games.


19. The Chelsea team which won their first five Premier League titles between 1955 and 1960 was the last team to have a 100% winning record in the league. This season, this feat has never been achieved in the present configuration of the English Premier League.


20. In 2013-2014, Leeds United was officially promoted to the top division of English football for the first time after winning League One last season by two points ahead of Norwich City and Wigan Athletic. So far, they have lost only one league game in their debut campaign in England's top division.


21. The Friday that is nowadays known as Blackpool day has actually a completely different history. It was started to honor the 18,000-strong crowd which attended a game against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1964-1965 season, which was the final league fixture for both teams that year.


22. Charlton Athletic was one of the oldest English football clubs before being relegated in 2008 for the first time since 1985. However, they are currently doing well in the Premier League table after promotion back to the top division this season and are currently among the top six teams for points in the league with seven games remaining in their current campaign.


23. The first English Premier League was known as the Football League First Division. It was not until 1983-1984 that it became known as the Premier League.


24. Blackburn Rovers won the title in the 1994-1995 season, but have never played in this division again since then. They were relegated in 1996 and since then, they have never come back to the top flight of English football to date.


25. During fall seasons, Southampton had an unbeaten home league record which stretched for 24 games between 1978 and 1980 seasons. The record was later broken by Arsenal in the 1999-2000 season when their 25 unbeaten games at home helped them win the title at the end of that campaign season for which Thierry Henry scored 34 goals.


26. Leeds United has won the Football League Championship title on five occasions. Three of these titles came during the 1970s. The two other ones were in 1999 and 2004.


27. Stoke cities are the only club in England's top division to win four league titles -- twice during 1981 and 1982 seasons and once each in 1973 and 1976 seasons.


28. Here is a fact that might surprise football fans – Chelsea had not won the English Premier League title before the 2014-2015 season, but they had already won a league title, an FA Cup trophy, and an EFL Cup trophy so far this season.
